“ A language is not some artifact in a museum to be preserved for posterity. Languages have to live and breath to thrive. So if you believe in living, breathing languages -- join me! ”
“ I love Esperanto. It’s the perfect conlang. Anybody can learn it. In fact, everyone should! Languages are going extinct every day. It’s evolution. Esperanto can just help speed up the process. If you agree - join me! ”
Conlang (short for constructed language) is a language whose phonology, grammar and/or vocabulary have been consciously devised by an individual or group instead of evolving naturally.
There are many reasons to either create or embrace a particular constructed language: For Libby, it is about bringing a constructed world to life as in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (after all, her Elvish poetry kicks butt); for Kip, it is about supporting a universal language (lets face it, they are the largest and most popular conlang in the world! Why create more?); and for Carl, it is all about the pure joy of self expression and artistic creation (what better way to express your feelings to a secret crush than through a language no one knows other than yourself?).
